WHAT IS MOTS-c?

MOTS-c is a small peptide encoded within mitochondrial DNA.

Mitochondria are commonly known for their role in cellular energy production, but researchers increasingly recognize that they also produce signaling molecules capable of influencing metabolic and cellular responses throughout the body.

MOTS-c has generated interest because research suggests it may participate in communication between mitochondria and the rest of the cell.

It is important to distinguish naturally occurring MOTS-c biology from the use of synthetic MOTS-c as an administered compound.

What we know

What remains uncertain

The safety, effectiveness, appropriate administration, long-term consequences and clinical benefit of synthetic MOTS-c when given to humans. FDA currently states that it has not identified human exposure data for compounded MOTS-c drug products and lacks important information regarding whether such products could cause harm.

SAFETY & REGULATORY STATUS

MOTS-c is not an FDA-approved medication.

FDA has identified potential concerns for compounded MOTS-c products involving immunogenicity, peptide-related impurities and active pharmaceutical ingredient characterization.

In July 2026, FDA’s Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee considered MOTS-c-related bulk drug substances as part of its evaluation of substances proposed for use in traditional compounding.

MOTS-c should not be described as proven safe, an established longevity therapy or a proven metabolic treatment.

MOTS-c may be one of the most fascinating compounds in this entire library, and also one where patience matters.

Mitochondrial biology, metabolism and exercise are all areas I find extremely interesting. But an exciting biological pathway is not the same thing as an established therapy.

This is exactly where I want The Balanced Body Lifestyle to separate “this deserves more research” from “this has been proven to work.”
